Fundamentals

Columns

Columns are linear members that resist loads mostly through compression. However, in some cases columns are also subjected to bending in addition to compression. This happens when (1) a column is subjected to lateral loads or (2) an exterior column is connected to beams through moment connections.

Deformation Due to Vertical Load

Most steel and wood columns are slender, therefore they are susceptible to buckling.
