In Canada, Triodetic Structures Limited started in 1953 as a subsidiary of F. Fentiman and Sons, Ltd., located in Ottawa, Ontario. They developed the Triodetic system in 1955, which used extruded cylindrical solid aluminum hubs with slots for connectors and tubular steel or aluminum members with matching crimped ends. A single bolt passes through the center of the node hub with end plates on both sides of the hub and nut keeps the members in place. In the beginning, only aluminum structures were built using this system, but in 1966 steel members were added.
Triodetic is a very cost-effective system as it requires very little skill for assembly. It is also very elegant and as a result has been used by architects for exposed structures.
